Triad megasite gets key ‘stamp of approval’ from KPMG

The Greensboro-Randolph Megasite, a 1,480-acre swath of land designed to lure a manufacturer that could produce hundreds of jobs, has been designated as a certified site by global tax and audit firm KPMG.

KPMG certified the site after a lengthy documentation process that evaluated everything from infrastructure to construction readiness. The megasite is located near Liberty about 30 miles southeast of Greensboro.

Bonnie Renfro, president of Randolph County Economic Development Corp., told the Triad Business Journal on Monday that the designation from KPMG means that the site meets requirements in areas such as site availability, developability, transportation, zoning and utility services.

She said certification eliminates risk for a potential user that would need access to rail, highways and utilities such as water, sewer power and gas.

“It will give them some confidence that there are no surprises — that it’s ready to go,” Renfro said. “Any company making a major investment wants that kind of assurance that they can move forward with confidence that they will be successful."

She said the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Foundation, which is headed by former Greensboro Mayor Jim Melvin, hired KPMG last year to “help evaluate and certify the site and to provide guidance on its development.”

Separately, the megasite foundation is working to gain site certification from the state. Renfro didn’t have a specific time frame for when that certification might be awarded.

The megasite is a public-private partnership that includes Randolph County, the city of Greensboro, the nonprofit Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Foundation and the N.C. Railroad Co.

N.C. Railroad is plans to buy additional 100 acres at the megasite for $2 million by the end of summer. That acreage comes on top of the 875 acres that the company expects to buy for $13 million.
